8-31-06: Ayaka Komatsu "Moon Doll" Idol DVD
Not bad. Not bad at all.

Wow, check it out, it's Ayaka Komatsu! You remember her, right? The girl who played Sailor Venus in the live-action version of Sailor Moon, and earned the ire of serious Sailor Moon fans everywhere by appearing in a bunch of (very mildy) racy photobooks and idol DVD's? Of course you do. Well, it's been a good long while since I've mentioned her on this site (despite the fact that I called her my favorite Sailor Moon actress and idol in a little article I put together early last year) so I figured I might as well devote a little time here to writing about her latest idol DVD, entitled "Moon Doll".

Unlike most idol DVD's, Ayaka's Moon Doll (this is her fourth DVD) actually has something of a plot: it's all about her character getting nostalgic for her high school days and coming to terms with them (that seemed to be the gist of it, anyway). Granted, the only real purpose of this "plot" is to force some semblance of a narrative on a series of scenes featuring Ayaka doing various cute, sexy and/or appealing things -- usually while wearing very little clothing -- but hey, at least they're trying to be sorta subtle about it.

The whole thing was shot on Guam, a place about which I know little except that it's crawling with Asian tourists and brown tree snakes (Guam has, according to Wikipedia, an estimated 2,000 snakes per square kilometer -- ugh). Fortunately for me (I'm a little ophidiophobic), Ayaka doesn't run into any of the arboreal pests at any point during this forty-minute DVD. She does meet a koala bear (although it looked heavily sedated to me) and some little kangaroos in the extra behind-the-scenes footage, though.

In addition to all the usual bikinirific and lingerieish scenes, she also takes a little time out to play some ping-pong (one of her unique talents; she's apparently a pretty superb player). Since they never bother to show her opponent, it's hard to get a sense of just how good she is, but I'm willing to bet most casual players would probably have a tough time beating her. She can really smack the hell out of that thing.

Without a doubt, the most astonishing thing on the DVD is the song "Cross My Heart", which plays while Ayaka is running around in a school uniform (she runs to the beach, then surreptiously strips down to a bikini and hops in the ocean -- the scene is played pretty voyeuristically). The song itself is just run-of-the-mill bubblegum pop -- but it's sung by Ayaka herself, completely in English, and her pronounciation is absolutely perfect. Needless to say, I was very impressed.

In terms of raciness...well, I didn't think it was too bad. A little provocative at times, sure (the camera has a tendency to zoom in close and linger on the more, shall we say, intriguing parts of her body) but that's pretty much the point of these things, and anyway, it's not like she ever takes it all off, or dresses up in anything especially smutty. So far as I'm concerned, this is girl-next-door stuff. (The production values also appear to be a lot higher than they were on her first idol DVD, the one I wrote about in that earlier article).
